How norms concerning maternity, femininity and cisgender increase stress among lesbians, bisexual women and transgender people with a fear of childbirth

To explore and describe norms concerning maternity, femininity cisgender in lesbian bisexual women transgender people (LBT) assigned female at birth, with an expressed fear of childbirth (FOC). Semi-structured interviews were conducted self-identified LBT FOC. 17 participated. 15 had FOC, two non-afraid partners. Participants described how their FOC was related to ideals “the primal woman”, including a natural birth. They also stress relation expectations gaining feminine-coded body during pregnancy being as feminine women. Maternity ideals, the ideal “natural” can be particularly stressful on those who childbirth. Norms contribute among do not comfortably conform or gender expressions.
